Why you should write things down
When I was a kid, people told me
to save everything I wrote, and
to NEVER throw it away.
"You might need it someday," they said.
To this day I am still not sure what they meant,
but they were right.
When trauma takes away your memories,
you have to start reading about yourself in diaries, essays, and old poems.
They begin to feel like history books.
And while most of you won’t become amnesiacs,
you will forget.

When you begin forgetting things,
your brain will make up excuses for the gaps in your memory.
